If you've got to gift a loved one and it's an extra special occasion, then few other things say it better than a well-chosen piece of jewellery. Unless, they love their wheels or gadgets that is, but then, it would be totally different then and we'd be going off on a different road!
When it comes to couples, rings happen to be by far, the most popular of options. Convenient, readily available and quite versatile to wear at any occasion, a tastefully designed ring wields enough power to instantly elevate the wearer to be the cynosure of the evening. They also signify an intimate bond between man & woman, thereby making them all the more desirable.
The Egyptians were indeed among the foremost of civilizations and are credited with many a jewellery tradition that is being followed today. Besides jewellery, they even pioneered new ways in the making of glass artefacts, and invented one of the earliest ways to interpret time. According to historians, it was they who started off the trend of presenting a ring to their special someone. Symbolic of a love that was intended to last forever, they even turned to reptilian references of mythological origin for design inspirations. Even back then, their creations were constructed from metal and encrusted (either fully or partially) with precious & semi-precious stones. The eternity rings of today have continued with this ancient custom.
Ever wonder why such rings are always worn on 'that' finger and not any other? Well, this is because, it is believed that it is the third finger that contains the vein of love. Traditional conventions meant that, such rings were only reserved for being presented around the time of the wedding ceremony. However, as the world progressed and entered the modern era, the entire concept was turned on its head. Going beyond the ring, it was the gesture of presenting it that came to signify that they had been worthy enough of receiving such a precious gift.
Thus, people today tend to spend a considerable amount of time conceptualizing and getting every tiny detail right about the ring. Simply looking at the choice of metals is enough to boggle one's mind. The old favourite, yellow gold still resonates strongly with those who want something that pays homage to its illustrious past. Those with a more modernist bent of mind (and with finances to spare) tend to go along with titanium.
Even between these two extremes, there are plenty of options, such as pure silver, silver alloys, white gold, tungsten, and rhodium and so on. Each of these materials appeals to a different set of recipients. Hence, it is extremely important that one should know their partners preferences rather well. Some may scoff at the mention of this, but they'd be surprised (and a few ladies may even nod in agreement) to know the number of guys who are still fishing in the dark when it comes to the jewellery preferences of their significant others.
Allergies for example are a prime example. A ring that is going to be worn for long stretches (if not forever) will need to be free from this. It will also need to be hard wearing, maintain its shine & brilliance, while complementing the personality (and beauty) of the one wearing it.
ABC is a person who believes in living it up at every stage of life. Happy-as-a-lark, she loves her jewellery and has turned her passion into a lifetime's vocation by pursuing a consulting career in branding. She simply can't stop gushing over eternity rings and absolutely wishes that someday, her man will surprise her with one!
